The Champaign Police Department, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and over 200 local law enforcement agencies will intensify enforcement against speeding starting this month, according to a city press release.

In the announcement, CPD Chief Timothy Tyler noted the rationale for the intensification.

“Speeding causes unnecessary danger on our roads and puts drivers, passengers and others sharing the roadway at increased risk,” Tyler wrote. “Champaign Police remind drivers to obey the posted speeds and to ensure that everyone gets home safely.”

Throughout the month, Champaign Police officers will be conducting visible patrols to prevent speeding and promote road safety. Citations and written warnings will be issued to those found exceeding speed limits or violating other traffic laws, with a focus on main roads and residential neighborhoods.

The initiative is funded by federal traffic safety grants managed by IDOT.

The Fighting Illini have secured a 2025 commitment from Jershaun Newton, a three-star quarterback from Clearwater Central Catholic High School in Florida. Newton, younger brother of former Illini star and current Washington Commander Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton, announced his decision on social media.

Standing at 6-foot, 205 pounds, Newton is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 51 best QB in the 2025 class, the No. 91 Florida recruit for his class and the 669th overall recruit in the nation. He chose Illinois over offers from numerous Power Five programs including Ole Miss, Florida State, Miami, Indiana and Mississippi State.

As a junior, Newton showcased his skills by completing 65% of his passes for 2,084 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 1,020 yards and five touchdowns and contributed defensively with six tackles-for-loss and four sacks as a linebacker. He led his high school team to back-to-back State championship berths.

Newton is set to continue the family legacy at Illinois, following in the footsteps of his older brother Jer’Zhan. As a junior in 2023, Jer’Zhan was a team captain, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American. He led the team with 52 tackles, 8.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks, earning numerous accolades including a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy. Jer’Zhan was drafted in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Washington Commanders.

Jer’Zhan’s success sets a high bar for Jershaun as he begins his journey with the Illini.

The University’s Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Biomanufacturing program has received a substantial boost with a $51 million grant from the federal government. This funding is part of a $504 million allocation from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

The grants are part of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. The act, formally known as Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors, aims to “advance America’s global leadership in critical technologies, and strengthen our national and economic security,” according to the EDA.

The White House announced that 12 tech hubs across the nation will share the $504 million to enhance regional innovation and growth. The iFAB focuses on biomanufacturing, converting crops like corn and soybeans into a wide range of high-value commodities.

In a press release, Vice President Kamala Harris stated the importance of this investment.

“Every American deserves the opportunity to thrive, no matter where they live,” Harris stated. “These Tech Hubs will give regions across our nation the resources and opportunities necessary to lead in the economy of tomorrow while creating good-paying jobs for American workers.”

According to WCIA, state leaders are pleased with iFAB’s selection for this funding. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) expressed enthusiasm at the decision.

“I’m so pleased iFAB is receiving this critical Tech Hub funding, unlocking innovation, investment and job creation for years to come,” Duckworth said. “Illinois is already a hub of agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and technology, making our state ideally positioned for these Tech Hub awards.”

Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), whose district includes the University, responded similarly.

“The $51 million federal investment in the iFAB Tech Hub is a game changer for Central Illinois,” Budzinski said. “The funding announced today will build on that foundation with explosive economic growth and place Decatur, Monticello and Champaign at the center of a booming bioeconomy.”

More information on the CHIPS and Science Act is available on the EDA’s website. More information about iFAB is available on their website

Overnight, the Champaign Fire Department responded to two apartment fires that resulted in significant property damage and the displacement of residents from their homes.

The first fire occurred at 11:36 p.m. on Monday, at an eight-unit apartment building in the 500 block of E. Columbia Ave. The fire was reported by a passerby. Firefighters arrived to find a growing fire and went inside to investigate, where they encountered a fast-moving attic fire.

Firefighters used aerial ladders to reach the appropriate height and then utilized their hoses to bring the flames under control. The cause was determined to be accidental and related to electrical equipment. No injuries were reported, but the occupants of the apartment were displaced.

Just three hours later, at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, a separate fire broke out at a three-story apartment building in the 600 block of Crescent Drive. The fire was reported by an occupant. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the second and third-floor balconies and quickly escalated the response to a second alarm.

Crews deployed multiple hoses to control the blaze. No injuries were reported, but the building’s residents were forced to relocate. The cause of this fire remains under investigation.

In a press release, the CFD reminded everyone to maintain working smoke alarms and to practice a home escape plan.

“Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count,” the CFD wrote.

On Tuesday, the Experience Champaign-Urbana Foundation announced a new mural series as part of the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail. The Experience C-U Foundation and 40 North, the Champaign County Arts Council, declared this initiative to celebrate key themes in local African American history through public art.

The project is funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Tourism. 93 artists from 32 states and five countries responded to a call for artists, resulting in the selection of four artists who will create murals at various locations around Champaign-Urbana.

In a press release by the Experience C-U Foundation, project organizers discussed the initiative and goals.

It was remarkable and totally humbling. There were literally dozens of worldclass artists to choose from. We are so thrilled to welcome these amazing artists to transform and enrich our walls with such an inspiring narrative,” said Kelly White, executive director of 40 North. “I expect that in the near future, ChampaignUrbana could be on the map as one of the top destinations to see and experience some of the greatest African American muralists in the country.”

Rob “ProBlak” Gibbs from Boston will create a mural reflecting the theme of “African American Educational Excellence” at 1401 E. Main St. in Urbana. The Housing Authority of Champaign County owns the building, and the Urbana Neighborhood Connections Center, which occupies it, has also agreed to support the mural’s development and installation.

Jeremy Biggers from Dallas will focus on the theme of “African American Firsts and Barrier Breakers” at 212 E. White St. in Champaign. This building, along with the one at 511 E. White St. in Champaign where Georgie Nakima from Charlotte will portray “The Power of Black Women,” is owned by Fairlawn Real Estate, which has agreed to support both murals’ development and installation.

Oscar Joyo from Chicago will depict the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail Timeline on three walls at 1801 W. John St. in Champaign, a location also owned by Fairlawn Real Estate.

The Experience Champaign-Urbana Foundation is a nonprofit organization that generates resources “to promote a welcoming destination experience for visitors to strengthen economic opportunities and enhance the lives of residents.”

The Champaign County African American Heritage Trail is a project organized by Experience C-U that celebrates the contributions of African Americans in the area. Its stated mission is “to educate today’s residents and visitors about the rich cultural history of a people whose stories have been largely unrecognized.” The trail features signage and art pieces across the county, including 32 sites in the Champaign-Urbana area.

40 North and the Experience C-U Foundation say that they hope that the success of these murals will lead to more installations in the future. They encourage property owners interested in hosting a mural and donors who wish to support the project to reach out. For more information, contact Experience C-U.

“This is a fullcircle moment for the Heritage Trail,” said Jayne DeLuce, director of the ECU Foundation. “We’ve wanted to bring murals to the community as part of the Heritage Trail for years, but we simply didn’t have the resources.

Illinois football has added to its 2025 recruiting class with the commitments of two prospects from Indianapolis — wide receiver Davion Chandler from Lawrence North High School and defensive lineman Isaiah White from Ben Davis High School. Both three-star recruits announced their decisions after official visits to the University in recent weeks.

Davion Chandler

Davion Chandler is a 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver, who also plays cornerback for his high school team’s defense. Chandler chose Illinois over a competitive list of programs including Boston College, Kansas and West Virginia as well as Big Ten schools like Iowa, Michigan State and Purdue. Chandler is ranked as the no. 11 prospect in Indiana and the 120th-ranked wide receiver in the nation, according to 247Sports.

In his junior year, Chandler made a significant impact on the field, picking up 40 receptions for 779 yards and 13 touchdowns. Chandler had also planned official visits to Wisconsin and Indiana, but he opted to commit to Illinois early and forgo any additional college visits.

Isaiah White

Isaiah White, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive lineman, adds substantial strength to Illinois’ defensive front. White, who is ranked as the No. 18 prospect in Indiana and the 98th-ranked defensive lineman nationally by 247Sports, had an impressive junior season with 69 tackles and 7.5 sacks, contributing significantly to Ben Davis’s Class 6A state championship in 2023.

White chose Illinois over offers from Louisville, Boston College and Washington. He had already visited Louisville and had additional visits planned, but chose to commit to Illinois on June 9.

Notably, Illinois has also offered a scholarship to White’s brother, Isaac White, a running back who tallied 312 yards and three touchdowns as a junior. A familial connection has the opportunity to strengthen White’s performance for the Illini.

Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 24 prospect in Illinois and the 59th ranked edge rusher in the nation for the class of 2025, Brooks is the 1,151st ranked prospect in the nation for his class. During his junior season, Brooks recorded 58 tackles and 39 pressures.

Brooks’ commitment marks the eighth recruit for Illinois in the 2025 class and the first defensive lineman in the group.

The decision by Brooks makes him the fifth in-state player to commit to Illinois for the class of 2025. He joins other three-star prospects including offensive lineman Michael McDonough, quarterback Carson Boyd, defensive back Andre Lovett and wide receiver Brayden Trimble.

According to a report by 247Sports, Brooks expressed his appreciation for the attention and support from the Illinois coaching staff after a junior day visit to Illinois in March.

“The coaches, the love they’re showing me, they treat me as a priority,” Brooks said. “That’s really important to me. Because a lot of schools, they could say they just want you, but I feel like I’m a priority here and I feel like this is somewhere where I’m wanted and … somewhere I could see myself at as well.”

Brooks also spoke highly of Illinois defensive line coach Terrance Jamison.

“Coach Jamo is a real standout guy. Everything he says is real. He’s not going to sugarcoat anything … He’s one of the first guys who was involved in my recruiting process, so I really appreciate that from him,” Brooks said “He’s sending guys to the NFL, great at developing guys, and he’s a great coach.”

At the college level, Brooks is likely to transition from playing on the edge to an interior defensive line position. He has size, long arms and quickness, which may prove useful for disrupting plays in the backfield.

Rating: 9/10

Nestled in the heart of downtown Champaign, Watson’s Shack & Rail is a casual chicken restaurant and bar known for its specialty fried and rotisserie-style bird dishes.

Watson’s offers a vibrant atmosphere and a menu sure to delight both comfort food lovers and fried chicken enthusiasts. Upon entering, guests are greeted by warm lighting and unique chicken-themed decorations, setting the stage for an excellent dining experience.

Ambiance and service

The restaurant’s decor is charming and playful, with chicken motifs adorning the walls. The bathroom is clean and well-decorated, making the first impression even better.

The service was commendable; the service staff was attentive. Though they didn’t write down orders, they managed to flawlessly remember everything and ensured drinks were frequently filled. When it came to beverages, the peach sweet tea was refreshing, and the ice water was crisp.

Massive sandwiches

Watson’s has a large selection of sandwiches. The hot chicken sandwich features a massive fried chicken thigh drenched in Watson’s hot dip, sitting on a soft brioche bun and topped with coleslaw, pickles and their signature comeback sauce.

The sandwich was packed with flavor, and it was very crunchy on the outside while juicy on the inside. The brioche bun was substantial enough to withstand the moisture from the chicken and sauces without falling apart.

The coleslaw and pickles added a delightful crunch and creaminess, and the sauce provided an additional layer of flavor. In terms of heat level, the extra hot level was enjoyable but not as spicy advertising seemed to imply.

Other members of the table sampled a variety of sandwiches, all of which were generously sized. The regular chicken sandwich and the chicken bacon Swiss were both hits. The tofu po’boy, featuring battered and fried tofu slices, was praised for its texture and flavor, providing a satisfying option for vegetarians, though the menu features no other vegetarian entrees or sandwiches.

Tasty sides

For the side, the mashed potatoes, which were soft, pillowy, buttery and well-seasoned with a slight kick. The chicken gravy complemented the potatoes perfectly, mirroring the seasoning of the chicken and served piping hot.

The potato wedges  were well-salted with a slightly crispy exterior and a soft interior, though they could have used more crunch. The mac and cheese was also tasty; it was creamy and cheesy with slight spiciness.

Sweet treat

For dessert, “waffles are my jam,” a Belgian waffle topped with vanilla ice cream, Dutch chocolate drizzle, house-made strawberry bourbon jam, powdered sugar and strawberries was served to the table.

The waffle was soft with a slight crunch, and the combination of ice cream and chocolate was delightful. The jam and strawberries added a unique twist and elevated the dessert further.

Final thoughts

Overall, Watson’s Shack & Rail offers a delightful dining experience. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is both fun and welcoming, and the food is top-notch, making Watson’s a must-try spot in Champaign. Special thanks to The Daily Illini’s very own Helen Maurer for recommending this spot.

A recent point-in-time count for Champaign County revealed a significant rise in homelessness since last year. The count, conducted by the Continuum of Service Providers to the Homeless, found 279 individuals without stable housing, up from 215 in January 2023. Over 40 volunteers participated in locating and documenting those experiencing homelessness.

The 2024 PIT count reported 42 unsheltered individuals, with 152 in emergency shelters and 85 in transitional, or temporary housing.

In a press release from the City of Urbana, CSPH Chair Breaden Belcher noted the purpose of the count and the significance of the findings.

“The PIT count provides community stakeholders with important data that helps us more effectively meet the needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Champaign County,” Belcher wrote. “This year’s data shows the importance of ongoing investments in homeless services and high-quality affordable housing in our community.”

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires this annual count to provide a national overview of homelessness. The data collected helps shape federal funding and policies, such as the Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness and President Biden’s fiscal year 2024 budget.

CSPH Coordinator Katie Harmon noted improvements in this year’s count.

“This year we implemented an enhanced unsheltered Point-in-Time count protocol,” Harmon wrote. “This included canvassing additional areas that homeless service providers and street outreach workers identified as locations that people who are unsheltered frequent.”

Harmon also noted that the organization conducted follow-up surveys before analyzing the data.

“We partnered with various homeless service providers to conduct follow-up counting through the end of January to survey people accessing homeless services and identify if they were unsheltered on the night of our Point-in-Time count,” Harmon said.

Alongside the PIT count, the CSPH conducted a Housing Inventory Count, also required by the HUD, which showed a decrease in emergency shelter beds but significant increases in transitional and permanent housing beds. Harmon explained that this shift reflects the reclassification of certain projects, indicating expanded services and longer program stays for those in need.

While rapid rehousing beds remained stable, overall bed capacity increased by about 10 percent due to additional state funding.

The CSPH, which includes 44 non-profits, government agencies, faith-based organizations and businesses, aims to end homelessness in Champaign County. More resources for individuals experiencing homelessness are available at the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission’s office.
